Nature Journaling

Learning to Noticing

Before we ever open a notebook or draw a single line, the practice of nature journaling begins with something simple: noticing.

Children are already masters of this skill. They are natural noticers. They pause to watch an ant cross the sidewalk, pointing out a funny-shaped cloud, asking why the leaves crunch underfoot. Their curiosity is an opportunity to slow down as parents, reminding us that wonder lives in the smallest details if we take the time to look.

Noticing is the art of paying attention. It means seeing what is often overlooked: the way light shifts through branches, the hum of a bee in the garden, the stillness of a puddle before it ripples. These details are always there, but too often we move past them in a rush.

As parents and educators, we can nurture this gift by simply joining in. When a child stops to ask a question, we can pause with them. When they point out a discovery, we can share their delight. Over time, this practice deepens both mindfulness and connection—to nature, to our children, and to ourselves.

Practicing noticing doesn’t require tools or training. It starts with curiosity and a willingness to look more closely. You might try sitting quietly together for a few minutes and asking:

  • What do you see that you didn’t notice before?
  • What’s moving? What’s still?
  • What sounds can you hear if you stay very quiet?

This is the beginning of nature journaling, in the moment before pencil touches paper. By learning to notice alongside our children, we open ourselves to a world that is always speaking, always offering something new.

An Invitation to Begin:
Try a simple “Noticing Walk” with your kids. It doesn’t have to be far. It can be just around your block, to a nearby park, or even your own backyard. Each person can take turns pointing out one thing they see, hear, or feel. Keep going until you’ve each shared five discoveries. You’ll be amazed at how even the most familiar places suddenly feel full of surprises.

Here’s to finding everyday surprises!
